Hawaii palace takeover leader couldn't find throne
12 hours ago

HONOLULU (AP) — The leader of a Hawaiian pro-sovereignty group that broke into a historic palace once home to royalty said he planned to chain himself to the throne but couldn't find it because he had never been in the palace before.

But palace officials said three locks, including those securing the throne room, were damaged. No artifacts were damaged or stolen, but the group broke into a barracks building and raised a flag on the flagpole, officials said.

Police arrested 23 people during the stunt, in which members of the Kingdom of Hawaii locked the gates to the Iolani Palace on Friday.

The leader, 67-year-old James Kimo Akahi of Haiku, claims he is the rightful king of the islands. He told reporters Saturday that he had never been in the palace before Friday and didn't know where the throne was kept.

The palace will remain closed indefinitely while curators assess damage. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will decide when the palace can reopen, said Ruth Limtiaco, president of the Limtiaco Co., a public relations firm for the Friends of Iolani Palace.

During the takeover attempt, eight employees locked themselves in the palace and a nearby administrative building.

Several Native Hawaiian organizations have rival claims to sovereignty over the islands. Some supporters of sovereignty condemned Akahi's actions.

"That's atrocious, for him trying to sit on the throne at Iolani Palace," said Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr., a priest and longtime Hawaiian activist. "James Akahi is not the king of Hawaii."

Another group calling itself the Hawaiian Kingdom Government occupied the palace grounds April 30 and has been getting permits to set up there each week since then. That group claims to be operating a functioning government from the grounds.

The 23 people arrested Friday face charges of criminal trespassing and burglary. State officers climbed over the fence a couple of hours after the takeover began.

Hawaiian activists have long used the site for protests against U.S. control of the islands. Legislation in the U.S. Senate would set up a Native Hawaiian governing entity similar to those of American Indians that could negotiate with state and federal governments over control of natural resources, lands and assets.

The ornate palace is operated as a museum of Hawaiian royalty. King Kalakaua built it in 1882, and it also served as the residence for his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, the islands' last ruling monarch. Liliuokalani was later imprisoned in the palace after the monarchy fell.

How do you plan to storm a Palace and take over the throne and not do any reconnaissance to find out where the throne is first? Especially since the palace has tours open to the public.

Almost makes me embarrassed to admit I'm Hawaiian.

I don't understand how people can do stuff like this. I know where this happened to. Thats my childhood neighborhood. I think my grandparents lived there until I was in the 6th grade.

Then and a child this age? How could they let him wander around like that when there is a neighbor such as him that you are aware of. It breaks my heart.

I share with you the following

The Wackiest Laws Still on the Books

If you're planning to visit Alabama any time soon, make sure you don't challenge a bear to a wrestling match. It could land you in jail since bear wrestling is a Class B felony in the Yellowhammer State. And if you're thinking of dressing as a nun to go trick-or-treating in Mobile, think again. Impersonating a nun or other member of the clergy is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $500.

These are just two examples of the many wacky statutes on the books, not just in Alabama but in states across the nation. Here are a few more that might make you wonder what lawmakers were thinking:

  • It's illegal to collect rags or paper in Indianapolis on Sundays. Don't go rag or paper collecting on legal holidays either, or you could be subject to a fine. However, it's generally okay to collect rags and paper after 7:30 a.m. and before 5:30.

  • Don't skip your Saturday night bath in Barre, Vermont. There is a law on the books requiring all residents to bathe every Saturday night. Washing on other days of the week is apparently optional and left to the discretion of the residents.

  • When attacked by a bird, you can throw a rock at it in Indianapolis. However, it is illegal to throw stones at birds if you're not acting in self-defense.

  • Michigan will pay you to throw rocks at birds. But only if you kill them, and only if they're starlings or crows. The state pays three cents for each starling killed and ten cents per crow.

  • Florida forbids the tethering of pregnant pigs. It is also illegal to confine an expecting sow to a cage, crate or other enclosure that prevents the pig from turning around freely.

  • You can't sell your eyes in Texas. "The Eyes of Texas" is the official song of the University of Texas, and they are apparently not for sale. Nor are any other bodily organs, under penalty of law.

  • Pinball is not for children in South Carolina. For some reason, you have to be at least 18 to play pinball in the Palmetto State.

  • In Belvedere, California, dogs must not appear in public without their masters on a leash. The city council probably intended to make sure the canines rather than the humans were leashed.

  • If you have political ambitions in Tennessee, don't participate in a duel. The state prohibits people who have been in a duel from holding public office.

  • Only genuine smack-downs are permitted in Louisiana. State law prohibits the exhibition of fake wrestling matches.

This is only a sampling of the many crazy laws still on the books in states across the US. In addition to avoiding breaking obvious laws like posted speed limits in your town, you should also take care to avoid whaling in Oklahoma or selling blue ducklings in Kentucky. Remember, ignorance of the law is no excuse!

Well, it feels surreal about the shootings yesterday. So much speculation going on its frustrating. All of our local channels have had nonstop coverage of it since it happened. Sadly, one of the victims worked here and her daughter still does. She was currently a realtor and was getting some extra cash as a gift wrapper at Von Mauer. She worked here for more than 20 years before becoming a realtor. The department she worked in is next door to us and its a very somber feeling in there.

I cant seem to go anywhere where someone isnt talking about it or playing the news about the shootings. I dont understand why people want to obsess over this tragedy. I need a break from it already. Im retreating to my private bubble and putting on my headphones and playing my music as loud as I can stand.

The news is reporting that there has been some people shot at Westroads Mall here in Omaha. Its located only a few blocks from where I work. There have been unconfirmed reports that as many as 5 people have been wounded 2 people are dead and another in the mall with a self inflicted gun shot wound.

Thats scary stuff given the close proximity to my work and home. Plus Sammy catches her bus connection at that mall. Ive been trying to contact her but shes not answering her phone. Im sure its because she is already at work.

The Pollyanna in me has to end on a good note (so to speak)

The incident began at 2pm central time. at 2:27pm they reported the police are still trying to surround the mall. I thought... You know I always felt that was a squirrely mall.

At 2:38 they reported the Police have done a sweep of the 1st floor of JC Penney and it is all clear. You can now re enter JC Penneys. I thought... Yes, I was afraid I wouldnt be able to take advantage of those doorbuster sales.

Parents Warn Others About MySpace After Unusual Case Leads Their Daughter To Suicide
Monday November 19, 2007
CityNews.ca Staff

A convoluted and incredibly tragic case that emerged on the weekend has the grieving parents of a teenaged girl issuing a warning to other moms and dads about the dangers of online social networking sites in general and MySpace in particular.

In case you missed it, this story is a strange combination of two adults doing everything right and two others accused of doing everything wrong. It began earlier this fall in the small town of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, not far from St. Louis, when a shy and slightly overweight 13-year-old named Megan Meier received a request and a picture from another teenager named Josh Evans to become her friend via MySpace.

She went to her parents, excited that the guy was "hot" and anxious to exchange messages with her. Her mother carefully looked over Josh's profile, saw nothing dangerous, and agreed to allow the two to virtually chat.

Josh said he'd just moved to a nearby neighbourhood in the city of 7,000, was being homeschooled, but didn't have a local phone number where she could reach him, so their online chats were the only way to contact him. Their back and forth messages continued for some time until October 15th, when Josh suddenly sent her a disturbing text saying he'd been hearing some terrible things about how she treated her friends and wasn't going to talk to her anymore.

Then other messages started to get posted about her online, with hurtful harangues saying things like, "Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat." The youngster, who was already on medication to fight depression, was devastated and couldn't figure out what prompted the cruel taunts.

But a final message from Josh telling her he thought the world would be better off without her was too much for the youngster. Her distraught parents did their best to comfort her, with her father telling her everything would be fine. But Megan ran upstairs in tears and slammed the door to her bedroom, upset about the turn her reputation had taken. When her parents went up to check on her 20 minutes later it was too late - Megan had hung herself in her room. She died the next day in hospital.

As terrible as this story is, it gets worse - because it turns out there really was no "Josh Evans." He was the fictional creation of the parents of a family who lived nearby, who had heard rumours that the girl was talking derogatorily about their own daughter and wanted to see what she was saying in a way that would trick the youngster. The girl, her mother and another adult had all taken turns composing the messages that won the child's trust - then shattered it in the cruelest way possible.

A friend discovered the deception and told the shocked parents six weeks after their daughter's death. Now Tina and Ron Meir are pleading with local authorities to lay charges against the adults who they believe contributed to Megan's suicide. The outraged mom doesn't believe anyone wanted the final outcome. "But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old, with or without mental problems, it is absolutely vile," she told a local newspaper.

Police say there's not much they can do to get justice for the Meiers, noting as terrible as what seems to have happened was, no one broke any laws. The local government is now pondering passing legislation that would outlaw such actions. But it won't come in time to save Megan or her family.

The fall out from this terrible incident continues, with neighbour turning against neighbour. The Meiers are accused of destroying a foosball table they were storing for the family involved, dumping the pieces on their lawn and telling them to move. And the stress has now led Ron and Tina to separate, with divorce plans in the works.

But despite their acrimony, Megan's parents have now come together one last time to warn others about the potential hazards of online social networks - and the bitter reality that you can never quite believe everything you see.

Caught... )

My personal opinion of this article is...

If there werent people always trying to beat the system then companies wouldnt have to resort to such measures. In both instances offered in the article the persons in question were stealing money from the company. Further they are in possession of company equipment. They have the reasonable right to keep track of their equipment. The GPS is on the phone not the person.
